With the modernization of the the Port of Brownsville and its continuing improvement plans, the economic impact on the community and the Valley as a whole is going to be tremendous. With ten deep sea dry cargo docks, four deep sea liquid cargo docks; two liquid cargo barge docks; and a one dry cargo barge dock, the Port is attracting a great deal of shipping interest, especially since the signing of the American Free Trade Agreement.
Principal imports and exports include chemicals, LPG, clays, petroleum, grain, agricultural products, sulfur, steel, bulk minerals, ores, fertilizers and aluminum. The Port, once planned improvements are complete, will quickly become a popular shipping destination for Chinese imports headed to the Americas. In addition to shipping, the Port is home to marine construction companies, a shipyard specializing in major repairs and refits, and construction associated with the offshore oil and gas industry. The Shrimp Basin at the Port is home to one of the largest shrimping fleets in the world.
