If you're a true blooded Texan (with the exception of our veggie friends), then a good steak is always in order. And well it should be considering Texas is the number one producer of fine beef cattle in the nation. In Texas, you see, a good steak is more than tradition - it's a way of life.

But using the right cut and quality of meat is just the tip of the iceberg when you're looking to grill up the best Texas steak in the world. Having the right cut of meat may be number one on the list of priorities when you're hungry for a good Texas steak. But how that steak is prepared and, more importantly, the way it tastes once it has been cooked is the most important part of the formula. And - it seems - every steak lover and chuckwagon chef in the Lone Star State has their own special way to prepare that red, delicious, prime steak entree.

Is your signature steak better than everyone else's siganture steak?

You have a chance to find out and pit your steak skills against some of the best in the state when the Texas STEAKholders Festival gets underway Oct. 17 in Giddings, Texas.

Missy Morse, festival coordinator, invites the best Texas steak cooks to compete for the title of "best of the best" in a championship steak cook-off that promotes sportsmanship and family fun.

Steaks will be judged with regard to taste, appearance, texture and tenderness - all the important elements of a good Texas steak. To make the competition fair for all, rib eye steaks will be provided by City Meat Market in Giddings. Cooking teams will be allowed to submit one steak for judging, cooked to the team's preference (rare, medium rade, medium, medium well, well done, etc.). Five judges will then pick the Top Ten steaks. In the second round of the competition, five steaks will be decalred the ribbon winners.

It all kicks off with a mandatory competitor's meeting where all the rules will be discussed in detail.

If you think you have the winning recipe for the best steak in Texas, this festival provides the perfect opportunity to prove your worth! But you had better hurry. There's a lot of great cooks in Texas (in case you haven't heard), and the competition is expected to fill up early.
